Vibration analysis is a proven technique for determining the condition of rotating machinery. It requires in-depth knowledge and insight into rotational speeds, (shaft) loads, natural frequencies, and the influence of temperature. Every deviation causes a unique vibration pattern, making this method highly suitable as a basis for preventive maintenance.
ELMA performs vibration measurements using spectrum analysis. The measurement data is displayed in a spectrum, where specific frequencies indicate potential machine faults. Correct interpretation requires specialist knowledge of factors such as rotational speeds, loads, and natural frequencies. Based on this, the service engineer draws conclusions regarding the condition and operation of the machine, and any malfunctions are identified.
There are many applications for vibration measurements. Additionally, there are various perspectives on how to perform and analyze a measurement.
Measurements based on general key indicators – often combined with red, yellow, or green ratings – only provide insight into the overall vibration level of a machine at that specific moment. However, if measurement data is compared with previous measurements, a trend is established. This shows any potential decrease or increase.
The cause of the problem within the rotating machine must ultimately still be assessed through visual inspections. This is the only way to determine which machine component is subject to wear.
